IO240 & 2009+ O200 Installation

If you have a TCM IO-240 or new O200 with TCM P/N 657375, order P/N C12ST2/S (identical equivalent of TCM P/N 657375) or send the 657375 to Sky-Tec for rebuild.

KCST2 Pull Start Conversion Installation

If converting A65-12, A75-12, C85-12, C90, C145, O200 or O300 with TCM's mechanical/electric pull-type starter to a Sky-Tec starter, purchase part number KCST2, a kit that contains:

  1. C12ST2/S Starter,

  2. KCSW push button starter switch assembly and placard,

  3. STC SE10076SC (engine mod to install C12ST2/S), and

  4. STC SA10077SC (airframe modification to replace pull-start mechanism with push- to- start button).

Installation of the C12ST2/S in the KCST2 kit is certified by STC SE10076SC (engine modification required to install C12ST2/S) and STC SA10077SC (airframe modification required to install 71001 Push Button Starter Switch Assembly and 70150 "Push To Start" Placard).

Note to GO-300 owners ONLY:   Purchase KCST2/SR.  That kit is identical to the one above but includes a C12ST2/SR REVERSE TURNING starter.

Note to former B&C Starter or "gold" TCM starter owners:

If replacing TCM's "gold" starter or a B&C Continental starter, simply order  replacement starter C12ST2/S.

Factory Key-Start Installation

If your aircraft was manufactured with factory key-start O200 or O300, order a stock C12ST2 starter from your favorite dealer, install and enjoy.  We even include the gasket!

The C12ST2 starter has a small dowel boss on the nose of the starter that will insert into the needle bearing inside the rear of the engine.  The only purpose for that dowel is to keep your bearing needles from falling out.

The C12ST2 features a "long nose" or more descriptively, a dowel-end protrusion designed to align with, and upon installation, insert into  the needle bearing installed between the case halves on the rear of TCM factory key-start O200 and O300 engines.

Since it is not necessary to pull the needle bearing from the insert between the case halves, installation  of C12ST2 is extremely simple.  The fixed dowel end protrusion does not rotate but simply fills the void inside the needle bearing to prevent the needles from falling out should the needle keeper become compromised.

Electrical wiring of the C12ST2 is identical to the factory starter: a single, heavy-weight starter cable connects the output of the aircraft's existing starter solenoid/contactor with the power input terminal on the C12ST2.

Safe for ALL TCM starter adapters!

ST3 series starters were engineered with the following design features:

TCM Starter Adapter "friendly"

Incredibly low weight (only 6.5 lbs!);

Mild 1.4 kW motor coupled with aggressive gear reduction for high torque, moderate cranking RPM &  low current draw;

A patent-pending, common-sense design that eliminates the majority of "broken spring" scenarios that occur so frequently on "improved style" TCM starter adapters;

Nearly instantaneous release of the starter adapter wrap spring virtually eliminating starter-induced adapter wear;

Safe & approved for ALL starter adaptors ("classic style", "improved style", "permold", "sand cast", etc.);

A simple, easy-to-install, bolt-off/bolt-on, maintenance-free starter that fits the entire "large" series Continental engines (with right-angle starter adapters) from O-300-D through TSIO-550 engines;

Highest torque possible with minimal current draw - perfect for aging Cessna singles with tail-mounted batteries.

Attractively designed and affordably produced making it the first and only choice in lightweight large Teledyne Continental engine starters.

Safe for ALL TCM starter adapters!

ST5 series starters offer the following features:

Powerful 2.2 kW high-torque, permanent magnet motor

Faster cranking RPM - typically 10-25% faster than heavyweight starters.

Light weight (9.4 lbs!);

Proven gear reduction drive train tempers current draw;

TCM starter adapter friendly electromechanically engaged/disengaged drive system provides instantaneous release of the starter adaptor wrap spring virtually eliminating starter-induced adapter wear;

Approved and recommended for ALL starter adaptors ("classic style", "improved style", "permold", "sand cast", etc.);

A simple, easy-to-install, bolt-off/bolt-on, maintenance-free starter that fits the entire "large" series Continental engines (with right-angle starter adapters) from O-300-D through TSIO-550 engines;

Attractively designed and affordably produced making it the first and only choice in lightweight large Teledyne Continental engine starters.

How much weight can it save?

The heavyweight OEM starter in our Ercoupe weighed 16+ lbs. The ST2/S weighs 9.2 lbs. for a total weight savings of more than 7 lbs.

How much weight can it save?

The heavyweight OEM starter and continuously running sprag clutch typically weigh about 16+ lbs. The ST2 weighs 9.2 lbs. for a total weight savings of approximately more than  7 lbs.

How much weight can it save?

The heavyweight OEM starters in most IO360 and O470's weigh more than 16+ lbs. The ST3 weighs 6.5 lbs. for a total weight savings of approximately more than  9 lbs.

How much weight can it save?

The heavyweight OEM starters in most IO520 and TSIO550's weigh more than 16+ lbs. The ST5 weighs 9.4 lbs. for a total weight savings of approximately nearly 7 lbs.

How is the ST2/S different?

The ST2/S starter incorporates an innovative self-resetting kickback protection clutch designed to momentarily slip should the aircraft ignition unexpectedly fail to sufficiently retard timing during start-up cranking.  ST2/S starters feature powerful 2.0kW motors coupled with a 19:1 total gear reduction system giving the ST2/S very high torque and very low current draw.  Cranking RPM is conservative but nearly always faster than older, heavyweight OEM starters.

How is the ST2 different?

The ST2 starter eliminates both the large, heavyweight OEM starter motor as well as the continuously running sprag clutch gear assembly.  Unlike the continuously running clutch, the ST2 only rotates when powered during start-up saving wear and possible tear of your O200/O300 engine.  The ST2 features an innovative self-resetting kickback protection clutch designed to momentarily slip should the aircraft ignition unexpectedly fail to sufficiently retard timing during start-up cranking.

How is the ST3 different?

The ST3 starter incorporates an innovative clutching system which enables the starter to engage the TCM starter adaptor while powered and completely disengage the powerful permanent magnet motor while the starter is unpowered.  This positive disengagement allows the TCM starter adaptor to fully unwrap under all normal operating conditions thus greatly prolonging starter adaptor life.

How is the ST5 starter different?

The ST5 starter couples a high power 2.2 kW motor with an innovative solenoid-engaged (and disengaged) drive system completely disengages the powerful permanent magnet motor while the starter is unpowered eliminating possible TCM starter adapter wear while providing authoritative, high-RPM starting.  Positive solenoid enabled engagement and disengagement allows the TCM starter adapter to fully unwrap under all normal operating conditions thus greatly prolonging starter adapter life.

How do I know which one to buy?

If you a) fly behind an IO-240 or b) currently pull a T-handle to engage & power your small Continental starter, the C12ST2/S is the starter to purchase.  Consult our extensive aircraft fit guide just to be sure.

How do I know which one to buy?

If your small TCM engine was configured by the factory with a needle bearing between the two case halves intented to support TCM's continuously running sprag clutch gear, the C12ST2 starter should be the right one for your application.  Consult our extensive aircraft fit guide just to be sure.

How do I know which one to buy?

This one is pretty easy!  If your TCM engine has a right-angle starter adaptor at the rear of the engine and a battery some distance from the starter, chances are this starter is the right one for your application.  Consult our extensive aircraft fit guide just to be sure.

How do I know which one to buy?

If your TCM engine has a right-angle starter adaptor at the rear of the engine and a clean source of nearly located battery voltage, chances are this starter is the right one for your application.  Consult our extensive aircraft fit guide just to be sure.

  "Someone told me to never install a permanent magnet starter on a TCM starter adapter!"

Ah, the amazing Mis-Information Super Highway...

Sky-Tec developed the ST3 and ST5 to satiate customers who may be  concerned their particular TCM starter adapter may not be completely compatible with the new generation permanent magnet starter motors. Many of those customers have experienced repeated starter adapter failures with TCM "Iskra" starters and are seeking a more reliable and starter-adapter-friendly design.  This is it.

Both the ST3 and ST5 starters utilize a powerful permanent magnet motor, but we also incorporate unique methods of releasing the engagement ensuring there is minimal drag on the starter adapter input shaft after power has been released from the starter.

We are confident you will find both the ST3 and the ST5 provide many years of reliable service for all types of TCM starter adapters.
